How to Choose A Roofing Contractor In Virginia:
Professionalism and Quality Workmanship
Your Main Objective
The Department of Commerce has an excellent pamphlet called "A Consumer's Guide to Selecting a Contractor in Virginia." Call (804) 367-8500 for a copy.
Also check for:
1. A permanent place of business
Confirm that the Virginia roofing contractor, supplier or associates are established with a permanent address, phone number and tax ID number. Also ask for the contractor's license number.
2. Knowledge of roofing systems
Research any type of roof systems your contractor suggests.
3. Affiliated with an industry organization
Involvement in a professional organization tends to keep a contractor better informed about any developments and issues related to the industry.
4. Insured
Ask for proof of insurance, and a copy of an insurance certificate. The company should have workers' compensation coverage and general liability coverage. Make sure the insurance coverage runs through the duration of your job.
5. Licensed and Bonded
Check with the Contractors Board at 804-367-8511 for the Virginia roofing contractor's license number.
6. References
Ask your contractor for a list of recent clients and a list of completed projects. Also check with the local Better Business Bureau.
7. Check with more than one roofer.
The lowest bid doesn't necessarily mean the "best" bid. Ask for a written proposal from several Virginia roofing contractors which lists descriptions of the work and exact specifications. Make sure it has the starting and completion dates, payment procedures, and any additional information such as landscape damage prevention and debris cleanup.
8. Warranties
Check for a manufacturer's warranty that covers materials and a warranty that covers workmanship (which will protect you if the roof is improperly installed).
