Terms of Apprenticeship:
The RAP term of apprenticeship consists of two (2) years of classroom instruction (300 hours) and 4,000 hours (2,000 hours per year) of on-the-job training.
Apprentice Supervisor:
Each Apprentice Sponsor designates a RAP Apprentice Supervisor for their company. The Apprentice Supervisor is responsible for making sure their apprentices get adequate on-the-job training. Apprentice Supervisors must attend a VARC Apprentice Supervisor Meeting to receive an overview of what the apprentices will learn during RAP classes and receive instruction on administering the on-the-job training. At the end of each month, the Apprentice Supervisor will submit a copy of the completed on-the-job training log for that month to the VARC office for each apprentice at his/her company.
Class Schedule:
RAP classes are held at Richmond Technical Center, and Norfolk Technical Center on Wednesday evenings in the Fall and Spring.
Cancellations/Refunds:
Requests for refunds due to the cancellation of an apprentice’s enrollment in RAP must be made no later than the first day of class.
Absences:
There are no excused or unexcused absences. Apprentices must attend 80% of the scheduled RAP classes per semester in order to receive credit for the course (no more than three (3) absences per semester). Failure to attend 80% of the scheduled classes will result in an immediate, non-refundable dismissal from the program.
Any apprentice dismissed from the program for violation of the attendance policy may appeal his/her dismissal to the RAP Committee.
“Make up” work for absences will be at the instructor’s discretion.
Grading Periods:
Grades are calculated on a semester basis. Grades are based upon the following formula:
Attendance & Participation 30%
Examinations 70%
Grading Scale:
Letter grades will be assigned based on the following scale:
100 - 90 A
89 - 80 B
79 - 70 C
69 - 60 D

Recruiting:
The classroom is considered to be a “neutral zone.” Discussions involving job openings and/or pay rates are strictly prohibited, and apprentices shall refrain from such discussions with other apprentices and/or instructors. A statement to this effect will be read by the Instructor at the beginning of each class. Violations of this policy will result in immediate, non-refundable termination from the program.
